The anti-Stockwell television ads that Brian paid for result in an indictment against the mayoral candidate, but leave Brian deeply in debt. He refuses to take money from Justin and, instead, lists his condo for sale, with Justin’s mom, Jennifer, acting as the real estate broker. Justin reveals Brian’s role in the ad campaign to Melanie and Lindsay, who persuade the Gay & Lesbian Center to hold a fund-raiser on Brian’s behalf, saving his condo. But Brian still needs a job after refusing to sign a contract with a noncompetition clause to get rehired at Vanguard. In addition, Brian’s attempt to start his own agency fails.
Meanwhile, Hunter, aka Jimmy Montgomery, avoids returning to the custody of his mother, Rita, by hiding in a cheap motel outside Pittsburgh with Michael. But after Ben telephones to report that Rita has threatened to have Michael arrested for kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Michael and Hunter return to Pittsburgh to face a custody hearing, with Melanie representing Hunter. The judge rules in Rita’s favor. Hunter kisses his mother on the mouth, then informs her that he has HIV. Rita curses him with an anti-gay epithet, and the judge immediately rescinds her order, awarding custody to Ben and Michael instead.
After hiding from Melanie and Lindsay, Emmett reluctantly visits Ted in rehab, where a startled Emmett learns that Ted’s drug counselor is Ted’s former addict boyfriend, Blake. Ted leaves rehab and confesses to Emmett his feelings of worthlessness and utter despair. Annoyed by Ted’s self-pity, Emmett sarcastically urges him to act on his suicidal thoughts. A drag performer at the fund-raiser for Brian is brutally attacked afterwards by two hoodlums on Liberty Avenue.
