As Michael prepares to celebrate his 30th birthday, he finally tells Debbie that he has stopped dating David. Enraged, Debbie accuses Brian of manipulating Michael’s affection, with no intention of ever returning the feeling. She demands Brian to let Michael go, so he can be happy with David. Brian promises to give Michael an unforgettable birthday party and personally goes to David’s house to invite him.
At the party, Michael is surprised and happy at David’s arrival. But Brian's gift, an original and very valuable comic book, overshadows David’s gift, a beautiful engraved watch. When Ted accuses Brian of sabotaging Michael’s happiness, Brian informs Ted that Michael saw the shrine in Michael’s honour. Ted later tells Michael that some men develop impossible infatuations because they feel they don’t deserve to be loved. Meanwhile Tracey arrives, and Brian introduces David as Michael’s boyfriend. Upset, Tracey runs out, and Michael follows her to apologize for lying about being gay. The following morning Debbie goes over to Brian’s apartment to gather Michael’s birthday gifts and tells Brian that she knows why he was so cruel to Michael, and she thanks him. After realizing he made a mistake leaving David, Michael asks David if they can live together.
Later, when Ted sees a past sexual partner purchasing HIV medication, he confides to Emmett that he and the man had unsafe sex. Ted realizes he should get tested, and Emmett joins him. Ted receives good news: he’s HIV negative. But Emmett’s phone call to return to the doctor’s office leaves him worried. Facing an entire weekend of uncertainty, Emmett grows nervous. At the clinic, Emmett learns he was asked to return because his check was rejected due to insufficient funds. When the cute male nurse asks him out to celebrate being negative, Emmett reveals that he’s made a pact with God never to have sex with another man.
